Summer Science Institute
Bring the joy and excitement of discovery to your science classroom, even on a budget and with limited resources!
Summer Institute on Inquiry Learning in the Sciences with Tyler DeWitt. August 3rd-9th. Pine Cobble School, Williamstown MA
Inquiry learning is a sure-fire way to get students engaged in science. But there can be many obstacles to adopting an inquiry approach. Many teachers don’t know where to begin: it can feel like starting teaching anew! And it can seem impossible without fancy labs, state-of-the art technology, and giant budgets.
In this week-long workshop, we’ll learn how to take the dive into inquiry science teaching: even—and especially—if your school has a tight budget and limited resources. Every day, participants will engage in immersive, practical, hands-on learning. In the morning, we’ll discuss readings, best practices, and observations, and we’ll work to design various activities and lessons. We’ll learn how impactful inquiry lessons can be built from simple, low-cost items from the grocery store or hardware store.
Then, in the afternoon, we’ll present the activities to middle-school and high-school students who will be joining us for a summer enrichment experience. We’ll observe each other’s lessons, and give critiques and feedback. Every participant will develop a toolbox of lessons and strategies that can be implemented as soon as they return to school in the fall.
The institute is primarily geared towards teachers of middle school and early high school (9th and 10th grade) who teach life science, physical science, and/or earth science. This will be a rewarding experience for both new and experienced teachers.
This week will be like a summer camp for people who are passionate about science education!
