Mrs. McGrath and her second grade class made the first of many trips to the Williamstown Food Pantry. They’ll return at different points throughout the year, each time developing a deeper sense of what it means to be a community member. At this visit, students worked very hard, sorting and organizing food in preparation for Thanksgiving. This was no mere field trip; they did the same work that adult volunteers would do. Someone wise once remarked that children get self-esteem not from heaps of praise, but from being a part of a community, from knowing that they have a role to play within that community. If you watch the video, you’ll notice that students remarked the experience made them feel “grand,” “happy,” and “proud.”
We’re proud of them, too.
