Dear Members of the Pine Cobble Community,
We are thrilled to announce that Eric Chapman has been appointed by the Board of Trustees as Pine Cobble’s 15th Head of School. Mr. Chapman was unanimously recommended by the Search Committee to the Board of Trustees who also unanimously approved his appointment to succeed Sue Wells in July 2022. We sought a dynamic, skilled leader to build upon Sue’s 11-year legacy as head of school, and to propel Pine Cobble to new heights, strengthening its position as a leader in academic and character education for children and young people. Mr. Chapman’s demonstrated strong leadership will prove invaluable in engaging and supporting the students, faculty, staff, and families of the Pine Cobble community. His clarity around academic promise and purpose and ability to prioritize and partner with all constituents at and beyond Pine Cobble will position our school to flourish. We are confident that Mr. Chapman will lead Pine Cobble with vision, authenticity, strategic intention, and demonstrable care, and with unwavering commitment to strong academics and principles of inclusion and respect for all members of our community. We are excited and energized by the promise and potential of Mr. Chapman’s appointment as our next Head of School.
Mr. Chapman has been a transformational education leader having spent most of his career working in schools, including 25 years as a teacher, mentor, administrator, and trustee. Mr. Chapman is currently Assistant Head of School for Academic Programs at the Park School in Brookline, Massachusetts. In this role, Eric is responsible for all academic operations related to students, faculty, and families in grades N-8, leads the team of department heads and school-wide curricular reviews, and oversees the hiring processes for all academic positions. Prior to his current role, Mr. Chapman held leadership roles in several schools in New York City, including as Head of Upper School at St. David’s School, Middle School Director at The Calhoun School, and Director of Diversity and Special Programs, 5th-8th grade Life Skills teacher, 7th grade English teacher, and Interim Middle School Director at the Town School; he also served as a teaching fellow and sixth grade teacher at Public School 40 in New York City. Early on in his career, Mr. Chapman was Director of Enrollment and Financial Aid and a member of the faculty at Dwight-Englewood School in New Jersey.
Eric is a member of the board of directors of the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE) and a former trustee of the Berkeley Carroll School (2009-2016). He is an alum of the Berkeley Carroll School, Tufts University (BA), Pace University (M.S.T. & MS.Ed degrees), and has pursued a doctorate in education from the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include governance, diversity, equity, and inclusion, student decision making and value judgment.
Mr. Chapman was chosen after a thorough national and global search led by an eight-member Head of School Search Committee which included current and former trustees, alums, faculty, and current and former parents. Since the announcement of Sue’s retirement this past Spring, we’ve worked closely with our consultants at Wickenden | DRG, and are grateful for their extraordinary support which resulted in our bringing three talented finalists to campus. We had an inclusive and transparent process that engaged all members of our community throughout the search period; gathered input and feedback through listening sessions and surveys at every stage, and performed a comprehensive interview process.
Mr. Chapman will assume the role of head of school on July 1, 2022, during the 85th anniversary year of Pine Cobble School – a celebratory and promising time to take the helm and lead the school to even greater heights. We look forward to welcoming him, his wife, and son to the extraordinary Pine Cobble community.
