How to help a child who is defiant and support from outside their box is not changing the situation?

Written by Eric Uthus on October 2, 2020

When: Redirection given verbally does not help the child and the child does not respond

When: Child does not respond to verbal efforts and does not change their behavior and the behavior persists or worsens

When: Child actively defies direction and acts in a way that makes their defiance unsafe for themselves or others – includes faculty and other students

Enter the box to do what is needed to support the child. Look for opportunities to minimize the time that you are within six feet of one another. If the time is going to be more than an in and out, please put on PPE – mask, face shield and gloves.

In all of the above look for opportunities to minimize the time that you are within six feet of one another and avoid being face to face with the child.
