7. Admissions Screening Process
At Pine Cobble School, we are committed to ensuring that each student has the opportunity to thrive in our learning environment.
As part of our admissions process, all students applying to Grades 1–8 are required to take academic screeners—formal assessments designed to help us understand each child’s current academic profile. Families are also asked to sign release forms so that school records and teacher recommendations can be sent to Pine Cobble directly from the child’s current school.
In addition to these academic screeners, the screening process may include:
- Informal assessments
- Review of psychoeducational testing, IEPs, and 504 Plans
- Observations
- Conversations with current or former educators
These tools help us understand how a student learns and determine whether our available programs and resources align with a student’s needs. Prospective students for Grades 1–8 will complete any applicable screeners on the day of their classroom visit.
Support & Services Limitations
Pine Cobble is a small school with limited resources and cannot accommodate students who require specialized support services, including but not limited to: guidance counselors, trained staff for behavioral intervention or de-escalation, one-on-one paraprofessionals, Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) or Applied Behavior Analysts (ABAs) who implement individualized behavior plans.
Additionally, we do not have a school nurse, and no staff member is authorized to administer medication to students.
Screening results are shared only internally with the admissions team and relevant educators. They are treated confidentially and are not disclosed outside the school.
8. Communication of Decision
Families are notified once the admissions review is complete.
Our Commitment to Equity and Inclusion
We approach this process with care, equity, and the understanding that students come from a wide range of educational backgrounds. Screenings are not used to rank students or penalize those with limited access to prior resources. Instead, they:
- Help us understand each child’s strengths and needs
- Allow us to make informed, student-centered decisions
- Ensure that Pine Cobble is the right environment to nurture a student’s growth, development and success
